How to Be the Change You Want to See in the World

When it comes to the sustainability movement at University of Tennessee/Knoxville, senior Maria Rosales has moved the equivalent of mountains. Inspired by the biggest coal ash spill in history, she decided to get serious about sustainability as a sophomore: “The need to move toward clean energy became more real and more urgent than ever, and the first place to start was on my campus.”

 While working with the school’s sustainability office to complete the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), Rosales learned the structure of the university’s system and saw places the university could move forward. “My mind exploded with ideas and knowledge,” she says. She put her ideas to work.
