Perks Shift from Office to Home

Over a two-year period, participants in Herman Miller workshops consistently ranked “work-life balance” as their top concern when discussing the future of work. They also told us that it’s the one that companies pay the least attention to.

Perhaps that’s changing. While there have been eye-popping perks out there (Microsoft engineers have access to an organic spa), now some companies are offering perks that target life at home instead of life at work, further blurring whatever line remains between the two spheres. The New York Times reports that Evernote foots the bill for every employee’s housecleaning twice a month, Deloitte helps out with eldercare, and Genentech helps employees find last minute childcare for sick kids.

The perks are designed to reduce stress at home, so workers will be more relaxed and focused at work. Deloitte expects such perks will become a trend. If so, it might be an indication that companies have come to a new understanding: When there’s a balance between work and life, everyone wins.
