Safety and Comfort for Behavioral Health Facilities

In a given year, one out of four adult Americans will experience some form of diagnosable behavioral or mental illness. Substance abuse, post-traumatic stress, and mild to severe depression are just a few examples.

The behavioral care units and facilities where people receive treatment are as diverse as their occupants. Historically, the aesthetic in these facilities has been minimalist, institutional, and clinical on their look and feel. But in the last few years, that has been changing.

The Veterans’ Administration, for example, is adopting the Planetree philosophy, which promotes a holistic approach to healing, one that considers the mental, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual aspects of healing. More and more private hospitals are moving in that direction. The trend is an acknowledgement that an environment can be safe—which is always paramount in a healthcare setting—and still foster activities that are important to patient healing, including socialization and relaxation.
